Once dependence is established as a stable orientation, it does not require enforcement. It perpetuates itself through feedback loops that reward compliance, punish deviation, and quietly align identity with stability rather than with authorship.
Institutions respond to predictable behavior because predictability reduces risk. Individuals react to institutional signals because those signals determine access, safety, and belonging. Over time, the loop tightens. The system adapts to the population it trains, and the population adapts to the system it inhabits.
When an individual adjusts themselves to remain acceptable, the institution interprets that adjustment as success. When many individuals engage in the same behavior, the institution codifies it as a norm. When deviation appears, it is treated as an anomaly rather than a signal. Correction follows. Nothing fundamental has changed.
These loops are reinforced through metrics, incentives, narratives, and identity formation. Performance reviews reward conformity. Educational pathways reward compliance. Political affiliation rewards alignment. Social platforms reward visibility. Each loop reinforces the same lesson: stability comes from fitting.
Because these loops operate continuously, they feel neutral. People experience themselves as choosing, striving, and improving. What they are actually doing is stabilizing a system that requires their adaptation to persist.
Feedback loops do not require belief. They function through repetition. They do not need enforcement. They are enforced by consequence. And because the consequences are distributed rather than explicit, resistance rarely forms.
The system does not need to convince people to depend on it. It only needs to make dependence easier than autonomy.
This is why the same patterns repeat across jobs, relationships, and environments. The settings change. The loop does not. People who recognize this pattern often describe feeling like they are “playing the game” while simultaneously believing they are making free choices. Both perceptions are accurate. The game does not announce itself as a game. It announces itself as reality.
The loop cannot be broken by fighting it. Resistance is still participation. If you are fighting the system, you are still organized around it. If you are rebelling against expectations, you are still regulated by them.
The loop weakens when internal regulation strengthens. When feedback informs rather than determines. When approval is noticed but not required. When deviation does not trigger destabilization. When participation can occur without disappearance. When leaving does not produce collapse.
The system has not changed. The relationship to it has.
Reform efforts fail because they try to change the system while everyone in it still depends on it. The system cannot change faster than the population’s capacity to tolerate change. But when individuals stop needing the loop to regulate them, the loop loses its grip. Institutions adjust—not because they are persuaded, but because their leverage no longer works.
This is how durable change occurs. Not through confrontation. Through withdrawal of dependence.
